Voice and Speech Pathology

A voice, speech or language disorder or problem, can call attention to itself, interfere with communication and cause discomfort or maladjustment.

These problems affect the ability to have a pleasant voice, or use it with ease; or to articulate speech sounds and words; or to speak smoothly and efficiently; or to "find the words" necessary to complete a sentence accurately. Disorders such as Dysphonia, Dysarthria, Apraxia, Stuttering or Aphasia can cause these difficulties, can exist independently or in combination, and can stand alone or be the result of other problems.

Often, foreign born individuals with noticeable accents have difficulty making themselves understood and may experience the same feelings of discomfort when attempting to express themselves in English.

Whatever the cause, if you or someone in your family, have a voice, speech or accent problem, it can have significant impact on personal and social life, on educational achievement and on professional choices and success as well.

Procedures In My Office

An evaluation is the first step to determine the presence and significance of a voice, speech language or accent problem. The evaluation involves completion of a questionnaire for obtaining a history, and the use of tests, various tasks and recordings, and usually takes about one hour. For complex problems more time may be required.

If the evaluation shows the need for voice, speech language or accent therapy, a schedule will be arranged to begin as soon as possible, usually within one or two weeks following the evaluation. Therapy and treatment sessions are provided on a regularly scheduled basis with one, two or more sessions per week, depending upon the nature and severity of the problem. therapy sessions are designed to treat the problem most successfully in the shortest possible time.

The amount of time spent in your treatment session is determined primarily by your needs. Occasionally, a health plan's treatment policy or reimbursement policy may have to be considered in scheduling.

The overall program of therapy visits in my office usually begins with sessions spaced closely together. They become less frequent as improvement occurs. Home practice is usually a part of the therapy program, and can be very helpful in achieving optimal results in the least amount of time.

Voice, speech, language or accent problems can usually be helped. I invite you to contact my office or one of the links listed on my links page.
